Contemporary Corsica: From Assimilation to Autonomy?
This communication was delivered at the conference Puerto Rico’s Status Conundrum in Comparative Perspective, on October 21, 2022. It deals with the Corsican political situation, which has dramatically evolved since the 1960s. In 1982, Corsica experienced a paradigm shift. It moved from the most advanced integration possible, to differentiated regionalization. However, the Corsican assembly has no legislative powers, and therefore no real autonomy. Corsican nationalism now represents 68% of the votes in the Corsican assembly, but institutional discussions on autonomy are facing major obstacles, both at the state and regional levels.
